The term "deacon" comes from the Greek word diákonos, meaning "servant" or "minister." The role or office of deacon was developed in the early church primarily to minister to the physical needs of the members of the body of Christ. After the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the church began to grow very fast. As the church expanded, challenges arose at meetings simply because of the size of the fellowship. The apostles, who had their hands full caring for the spiritual needs of the church, decided to appoint leaders who could tend to the physical and administrative needs within the body.
Scripture says: "So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the Word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the Word' " (Acts 6:2-4).
In the same way, our deacons at Mount Zion are carefully appointed for their fullness of Spirit and integrity, honesty, and leadership. They assist in many responsibilities and various ministries that keep our church in line with God's will. Serving as a deacon is a very rewarding and honorable calling in the church.
